Gerrard and Liverpool

"Life will be difficult for Liverpool without their captain; his influence has set down roots at all levels of the club. He is part of its fabric and part of its soul."

"More than a collection of superstars or a list of trophies, clubs and teams are what they mean to us, what we remember them to have been. That is a club's identity, not its achievements. Few players have ever contributed as much to any team's collective memory as Gerrard, and for that he is owed something."

"Liverpool's future, without Gerrard, does not look bleak. It looks, in fact, highly promising. But -- should it come to this -- that would be for another day. Football is not just about winning or losing. It is about something more: about the past, about pride, about stories to tell. "
